Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus, New Mexico

On March 9, 1916, forces led by Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa attacked the U.S. border town of Columbus, New Mexico, assaulting soldiers and civilians.

The raid provoked an immediate U.S. military response and border security measures under President Wilson and precipitated the Punitive Expedition into Mexico, heightening U.S.–Mexico tensions.
