Pershing's Punitive Expedition into Mexico begins

Following Pancho Villa's March 9 raid on Columbus, President Wilson authorized Brig. Gen. John J. Pershing to lead a punitive expedition, and U.S. forces crossed into northern Mexico on March 15, 1916 to pursue Villa's rebels.

The incursion was a major U.S. military operation on foreign soil that strained U.S.–Mexico relations, tested U.S. military logistics and preparedness, and had lasting diplomatic and political consequences during Wilson's presidency.
