Petrograd garrison mutinies and general strike spread revolutionary authority

On March 12, 1917, units of the Petrograd garrison refused orders to fire on demonstrators and joined striking workers, converting protests into an effective insurrection across the city.

The garrison's mutiny destroyed imperial control in the capital and directly precipitated the Tsar's abdication and the formation of a Provisional Government that the Wilson administration would soon recognize.
