President Eisenhower signs the National Defense Education Act

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA), authorizing federal funding to improve education in science, mathematics, and modern foreign languages and to provide student loans.

Passed in the wake of Sputnik, the NDEA represented a major federal commitment to education to bolster U.S. scientific and technical competitiveness during the Cold War and established long-lasting federal roles in higher education financing and curriculum support.
