Russo-Japanese peace negotiations begin at Portsmouth

Delegations from Russia and Japan, convened under President Theodore Roosevelt's mediation, began formal peace negotiations at Portsmouth, New Hampshire on August 9, 1905.

Those negotiations, brokered by Roosevelt, produced the Treaty of Portsmouth that ended the Russo-Japanese War and marked a major achievement in U.S. international diplomacy (earning Roosevelt the 1906 Nobel Peace Prize).
