Rwanda gains independence from Belgium

Rwanda formally became an independent state on July 1, 1962, ending Belgian colonial rule following UN-supervised transition arrangements.

Rwanda's independence was a major step in African decolonization that created a new diplomatic partner and affected Cold War-era regional alignments relevant to U.S. foreign policy.
