Seymour Expedition departs Tientsin to relieve Beijing legations

A multinational relief column led by British Admiral Edward Seymour, including U.S. sailors and marines, departed Tientsin (Tianjin) on June 10 to march toward Beijing to aid foreign legations threatened by Boxer activity.

The expedition marked a major escalation of foreign military intervention in China and set in motion clashes that would intensify the Boxer Rebellion and require a larger international relief force.
