Shooting in Brownsville, Texas sparks Brownsville Affair

On the night of August 13, 1906, gunfire in Brownsville, Texas left one civilian dead and led local authorities to accuse Black soldiers of the 25th Infantry Regiment of involvement.

The incident triggered a national racial and military controversy culminating in President Roosevelt’s later decision to dishonorably discharge Black soldiers, a major episode in early 20th‑century race relations and military justice.
