Signing of the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act of 1935

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act, authorizing approximately $4.88 billion for federal relief and public works to combat mass unemployment.

The law launched the Second New Deal’s large-scale federal work-relief effort and provided the funding that enabled creation of the Works Progress Administration and other major relief programs that reshaped American social and economic policy.
