Signing of the Indian Removal Act

Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law, authorizing the president to negotiate removal treaties with Native American tribes east of the Mississippi River.

The Act provided the legal framework for the forced relocation of tens of thousands of Native Americans from the Southeast—events that led to the Trail of Tears and profound, lasting consequences for Native nations and U.S. expansion.
