Signs the Air Mail Act (Kelly Act) into law

President Calvin Coolidge signed the Air Mail Act (commonly called the Kelly Act), authorizing the Post Office to contract with private companies to carry U.S. air mail.

The law created the basis for a commercial aviation industry in the United States by enabling private airlines to develop regular routes and receive government mail contracts, accelerating the growth of civil air transport.
