Sinking of RMS Lusitania

A German U-boat (U-20) torpedoed and sank the British passenger liner RMS Lusitania off the coast of Ireland, killing 1,198 people, including 128 U.S. citizens.

The deaths of Americans aboard the Lusitania provoked a major diplomatic crisis, shifted U.S. public opinion against Germany, and intensified pressure on Wilson's administration over how to respond to unrestricted submarine warfare.
