South Carolina convention adopts Ordinance of Nullification

On November 24, 1832, a South Carolina state convention passed the Ordinance of Nullification, declaring the federal Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 null and void within the state and forbidding their collection after February 1, 1833.

The ordinance precipitated the Nullification Crisis by directly challenging federal authority, forcing a confrontation that led to Jackson's firm federal response and a congressional tariff compromise.
