Soviet forces complete withdrawal from Afghanistan

On 1989-02-15 the Soviet Union completed the withdrawal of its last troops from Afghanistan, ending a decade-long military intervention.

The pullout ended a major Cold War military engagement, reshaped regional dynamics, and became a significant foreign-policy context for the early Bush administration's relations with the USSR and South Asia.
