Soviet launch of Sputnik 3

The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 3, a large scientific satellite carrying instruments to study the upper atmosphere and near-Earth space.

The launch intensified Cold War concerns in Washington, accelerated U.S. emphasis on space and science policy, and helped spur subsequent American initiatives that culminated in the creation of NASA and expanded scientific investment.
