Supreme Court decision in Apprendi v. New Jersey

The Supreme Court ruled that any fact (other than a prior conviction) that increases the penalty for a crime beyond the statutory maximum must be submitted to a jury and proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

Apprendi significantly altered sentencing law by strengthening the role of the jury in factfinding and laid the groundwork for later landmark decisions on sentencing procedures and defendants' Sixth Amendment rights.
