Sykes–Picot Agreement concluded between Britain and France

British and French negotiators agreed privately on May 16, 1916, to divide Ottoman-held territories in the Middle East into spheres of influence after World War I (the secret Sykes–Picot Agreement).

The accord shaped postwar borders and imperial control in the Middle East and later conflicted with President Wilson's public advocacy of national self-determination, influencing regional politics for decades.
