Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele) begins

On July 31, 1917, British forces launched the Third Battle of Ypres (commonly called Passchendaele) against German positions in Flanders on the Western Front.

The offensive developed into one of World War I's bloodiest campaigns, straining Allied manpower and materiel and influencing the timing and scale of American involvement in Europe.
