Torpedoing of the French ferry Sussex injures American passengers

A German U-boat torpedoed the French cross-Channel ferry Sussex on March 24, 1916, injuring passengers including several Americans and provoking international protest.

The attack led Woodrow Wilson to press Germany diplomatically for assurances against indiscriminate submarine attacks, a controversy that culminated in the Sussex Pledge and escalated U.S.–German tensions prior to American entry into World War I.
