U.S.-brokered agreement for PLO evacuation from Beirut

On August 21, 1982, a U.S.-brokered agreement was reached for the Palestine Liberation Organization to withdraw its fighters and leadership from Beirut under international supervision.

The agreement ended the immediate siege of West Beirut, reduced civilian casualties, and expanded U.S. diplomatic involvement that paved the way for a multinational peacekeeping presence in Lebanon.
