U.S. forces occupy Ponce, Puerto Rico

Following the July 25 landing at Guánica, American troops entered and took control of the city of Ponce after Spanish authorities evacuated and the town surrendered on July 28, 1898.

Securing Ponce gave U.S. forces control of a major southern port and advanced the American campaign to seize Puerto Rico, shaping the island's transition to U.S. military rule and postwar negotiations.
