U.S. Military Government Proclaimed in Manila after Capture

Following the capture of Manila on August 13, U.S. Army forces under General Wesley Merritt proclaimed a U.S. military government in the city on August 14, 1898.

The proclamation marked the start of direct American military administration in the Philippines and was a decisive step toward U.S. sovereignty there, shaping subsequent U.S.–Filipino relations and colonial policy.
