United States recognizes Bosnia and Herzegovina's independence

On April 7, 1992 the Bush administration formally extended diplomatic recognition to Bosnia and Herzegovina after its March independence referendum amid escalating interethnic violence.

Recognition committed the U.S. to formal diplomatic engagement in the emerging Bosnian conflict, shaping international responses and intensifying debate over whether to intervene or modify the UN arms embargo.
