United States recognizes Ghana on its independence

On March 6, 1957, the Gold Coast became the independent state of Ghana, and the Eisenhower administration formally recognized the new nation and extended U.S. congratulations and diplomatic recognition.

U.S. recognition of Ghana marked an early American diplomatic response to postwar decolonization in sub‑Saharan Africa and reflected Cold War competition for influence in newly independent states.
