United States signs the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

On August 5, 1963, negotiators for the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union signed the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, banning nuclear tests in the atmosphere, outer space, and under water.

The treaty, endorsed by President Kennedy, marked a major Cold War de‑escalation step, limited radioactive fallout, and established a precedent for subsequent arms‑control agreements.
