USS Greer attacked by German submarine in North Atlantic

The U.S. destroyer USS Greer was attacked and fired upon by a German U-boat (U-652) off Iceland after an exchange involving a British aircraft, suffering no loss of life or sinking.

The incident heightened U.S.-German naval confrontations in the Atlantic and provided President Roosevelt a focal point to justify stronger protection for American shipping prior to U.S. entry into World War II.
