USS Kearny torpedoed by German submarine in North Atlantic

While escorting a trans-Atlantic convoy, the U.S. destroyer USS Kearny was struck by a torpedo from a German U-boat, killing 11 crewmen and damaging the ship.

The attack intensified U.S.–German confrontation short of war, provoked protests from the Roosevelt administration, and increased American public and congressional support for stronger measures to defend U.S. shipping.
