Vienna Summit — Kennedy Meets Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev

On June 3–4, 1961 President John F. Kennedy met Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev in Vienna for a high-stakes summit addressing Berlin, disarmament, and East–West tensions.

The meeting hardened positions on Berlin, was widely viewed as a setback for Kennedy’s diplomatic standing, and helped set the tone for the escalating Cold War crises that followed, including the Berlin standoff and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
