Wilson signs the Federal Farm Loan Act

On July 17, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Farm Loan Act creating regional Federal Land Banks to extend long-term credit to farmers.

The law expanded federal support for rural credit as part of Wilson’s Progressive-era reforms, strengthening agricultural finance and the administration’s domestic policy legacy.
