Yalta Conference opens — Roosevelt meets Churchill and Stalin

President Franklin D. Roosevelt joined Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Premier Joseph Stalin at Yalta (Crimea) to begin high-level talks on the postwar settlement, including the fate of Germany, Eastern Europe, and plans for an international organization.

The conference launched negotiations that shaped the postwar map of Europe, set principles for the United Nations, and produced commitments that would profoundly influence the end of World War II and the coming Cold War.
