1980 Democratic National Convention opens in New York City

The Democratic National Convention opened at Madison Square Garden in New York City, convening delegates to complete the party's nomination process and adopt its platform.

The convention formally concentrated the party behind Jimmy Carter's re-election campaign and shaped the Democratic platform and messaging for the general election against Ronald Reagan.
