Alger Hiss convicted of perjury in espionage-related case

A federal jury convicted former State Department official Alger Hiss of perjury for denying under oath that he had passed classified documents to Whittaker Chambers.

The conviction heightened Cold War anti-communist sentiment, undermined public confidence in parts of the foreign-policy establishment, and intensified domestic security controversies during Truman’s presidency.
