Brazil proclaims independence from Portugal (Cry of Ipiranga)

On September 7, 1822, Prince Dom Pedro declared Brazil's independence from Portugal after the 'Cry of Ipiranga' near São Paulo.

The creation of an independent Brazil established a major new sovereign state in the Americas that would affect U.S. diplomatic recognition, trade opportunities, and Monroe administration policy toward Latin American independence movements.
