Capture of Saddam Hussein by U.S. Forces

U.S. forces captured former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein near Tikrit (in Operation Red Dawn), detaining him after he was found hiding in a small underground hideout.

The capture removed the central symbolic figure of the former Iraqi regime, affected the course of the U.S.-led occupation and reconstruction, and led to Saddam's subsequent trial and conviction.
