Carter Condemns Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

President Carter publicly condemned the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan after reports that Soviet forces had entered the country and Afghan leader Hafizullah Amin had been killed and replaced by Babrak Karmal.

The invasion produced a major Cold War crisis that sharply altered U.S.-Soviet relations and prompted a significant shift in U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union in the months that followed.
