Community Reinvestment Act signed into law

President Jimmy Carter signed the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) into law, directing federal regulators to assess banks’ records in meeting the credit needs of their entire communities, including low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

The CRA aimed to combat redlining and established a long-lasting regulatory framework requiring banks to serve local credit needs, influencing fair-lending enforcement and community development policy for decades.
