Completion of Hungnam evacuation

UN and U.S. forces completed the emergency evacuation from the North Korean port of Hungnam, carrying out final sailings on December 24, 1950, that removed tens of thousands of troops and civilians.

The evacuation preserved large numbers of UN troops and thousands of refugees from encirclement by Chinese forces, constituted one of the largest maritime evacuations of the war, and shaped the subsequent UN withdrawal from northeastern Korea.
