Czechoslovak coup d'état: Communist takeover prompts U.S. condemnation

On February 25, 1948, Communist leaders consolidated control of the Czechoslovak government in a coup, and the Truman administration publicly condemned the seizure of power.

The coup underscored Soviet dominance in Eastern Europe, intensified U.S. Cold War policymaking, and helped justify stronger American support for European recovery and security efforts.
