George C. Marshall was sworn in as United States Secretary of State, succeeding James F. Byrnes.

Marshall's appointment placed a widely respected wartime leader at the head of U.S. diplomacy at the start of the Cold War and set the stage for U.S. leadership in European recovery and postwar foreign policy, including development of what became the Marshall Plan.
