Maine admitted to the Union as the 23rd state

By act of Congress coordinated with the Missouri Compromise, Maine was admitted to the Union on March 15, 1820, separating from Massachusetts as a free state.

Maine's admission preserved the Senate balance between free and slave states and was a central element of the Missouri Compromise that temporarily eased sectional tensions over slavery.
