Medicare and Medicaid programs take effect

Medicare’s hospital insurance (Part A) and supplementary medical insurance (Part B), and the Medicaid program for low-income Americans, officially went into effect on July 1, 1966.

The start of Medicare and Medicaid marked a major expansion of federal social policy, providing nationwide health coverage to the elderly and poor and fundamentally reshaping U.S. health care and fiscal commitments.
