On September 11, 1973, Chile's armed forces, led by General Augusto Pinochet, overthrew democratically elected President Salvador Allende; Allende died during the attack on the presidential palace.

The coup ended Chile's democratic government and began Pinochet's dictatorship, prompting international attention and scrutiny of U.S. covert actions and policy toward Chile during the Nixon administration.
