Mississippi admitted to the Union as the 20th state

Mississippi was admitted to the Union on December 10, 1817, becoming the 20th state.

Admitted as a slave state, Mississippi's entry altered the sectional balance in Congress and contributed to the tensions over slavery's expansion that culminated in the Missouri Compromise and later debates.
