NATO formally admits Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic

On March 12, 1999, NATO formally welcomed Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic as members during accession ceremonies in Washington, D.C.

This was the first post–Cold War expansion of NATO into Central Europe, marking a major strategic and political shift in U.S. and allied security policy and a key foreign-policy achievement of the Clinton administration.
