Nixon signs the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act

President Nixon signed the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act, giving the federal government authority to allocate petroleum products and regulate their distribution and pricing in response to the oil crisis.

The law provided urgent federal tools to manage shortages during the 1973 oil embargo and marked a significant expansion of federal authority over energy supply and markets.
