Nixon signs the Marine Mammal Protection Act

President Nixon signed the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) into law, prohibiting the taking and importation of marine mammals and products in U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens.

As the first comprehensive U.S. statute to protect marine mammals, the MMPA created new conservation and regulatory standards that influenced fisheries management and wildlife protection policy.
