Operation Cedar Falls begins in Vietnam

U.S. and Army of the Republic of Vietnam forces launched Operation Cedar Falls on January 8, 1967, a major offensive aimed at clearing Viet Cong bases in the Iron Triangle north of Saigon.

As one of the largest ground operations of the war to that point, Cedar Falls exemplified the Johnson administration’s search-and-destroy strategy, had significant humanitarian and strategic consequences, and fueled debate over the effectiveness of large-scale clear-and-hold operations.
