Operation Thunderbolt begins — UN counteroffensive in Korea

On January 25, 1951, United Nations forces under General Matthew B. Ridgway launched Operation Thunderbolt, a major counteroffensive aimed at pushing Chinese and North Korean forces southward after the fall of Seoul.

The operation marked the start of a sustained UN push that halted the Communist advance, stabilized front lines, and set the conditions for subsequent retaking of territory and a shift to more limited, positional warfare.
