President Carter grants pardon to Vietnam-era draft evaders

On January 21, 1977, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation granting a full pardon to most men who had evaded the draft during the Vietnam War era.

The pardon fulfilled a central campaign promise, aimed to reconcile divisions from the Vietnam War and restore legal status and civil rights to thousands of Americans who had avoided induction.
