President Carter signs the Taiwan Relations Act into law

President Jimmy Carter signed the Taiwan Relations Act (Public Law 96-8), establishing the legal framework for unofficial U.S. relations with Taiwan after formal diplomatic recognition of the People's Republic of China.

The law preserved U.S. commercial, cultural, and defensive ties with Taiwan and became the enduring legal basis for U.S. policy toward Taiwan and cross-strait security.
